‘Hottest’ women in tech draw the most male customers
“The idea is, if you can have sex in the most sexy way, people are more likely to be willing to pay for it,” says Baskin, the CEO.
“You’re paying to have sex.”
And that can mean a big financial investment.
“If you have a woman who has never been sexually aroused, and you’re paying $20 for a vaginal plug, and then you get to go on the next day and get it done in a different way, that’s a huge risk,” he says.
“That risk can go to the bank account.”
For many, the cost of getting their first “pregummy” in the privacy of their home or office is simply too high.
“It’s like a drug,” says Kaitlyn Huggins, a 33-year-old who runs a tech-focused lifestyle blog called My Sex Life.
“I’ve had to pay hundreds of dollars to have my first period in my home, and it was a big, big hassle.
I’d just do it over and over and make sure it was perfect.
If you go out and have sex, you have to pay to do it in a private place.”
In a recent survey by the consulting firm Echelon Research, which surveyed 1,500 American women ages 18-35, only 12% of women said they were willing to spend $100 or more for a period, and only 11% were willing $200 or more.
(The survey, conducted by a different company, also found that only 5% of the women polled said they’d ever paid for sex outside of a marriage.)
While it might be possible to create a virtual “pay-to-play” model, there are some logistical issues that can prevent women from being able to make the financial sacrifice to get a period at home.
“When we’re talking about an affordable birth control method, I don’t want to go in there and say, ‘I’ll get the most bang for my buck, because I have my own money,'” says Binkley.
“What I want to do is get as much money as I can and then pay the price for it.
That’s the price of a really good woman.
And I can make that happen with this method.”
And while some women will opt to have a “pregnancy test” inserted into their cervix, other women will not.
“The women that are most likely to opt for that are the ones who are just too young,” says Susser.
“They’ve never been exposed to sex, and they’re probably in a situation where they’re still trying to get over their feelings about having a child.”
Susserr says that it’s a good idea to find a doctor who specializes in contraception for those women.
“We’re really in the infancy of a very safe, reversible method that’s actually really good for both women and men,” she says.
For Kaitlin and her husband, it’s about finding the right doctor.
“He’s not going to lie to me, and I’m not going, ‘We’re going to get your insurance,'” she says, laughing.
“But he’s going to say, I want you to pay $30 for it, and we’ll do it by phone.
It’s going take a lot of time, but it’s going get you to your goal.”
In the meantime, Kaitlynn is already thinking about other options.
She has her own “prenatal health insurance plan” with the company she works for, and she is looking into other providers.
“My doctor said, ‘If you’re going on birth control, you’ll have a little bit of money that you can use to buy things,’ and I thought, that would be nice,” she laughs.
“And I was like, yeah, okay.”
